Observation Narrative
Vegetation behind foredune consists of scattered individuals of Panicum amarum and Diodia teres interspersed with more robust clumps of P. amarulum. Hudsonia tomentosa is apparently absent from the Bay side of higher secondary dunes. Small islands of Smilax glauca and Campsis radicans form around larger grass patches, which results in the accumulation of organic matter and which may foster shrub establishment. Behind plot vegetation grades abruptly into narrow band of maritime dune scrub characterized by Prunus serotina, Diospyros virginiana, and Sassafras albidum (scattered individuals of Quercus nigra are present in more open patches) and thence behind dune into Pinus taeda forest. Smaller patches of this scrub vegetation are also present on crest of dunes among the maritime grassland mosaic. Ammophila breviligulata is the principal dominant on the low crest of the foredune.
